THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

THE HOLY EUCHARIST
Sister Sarah, Father Carlson, and Michael Thomas
(Required course for all THIRD year conferees.)
A study of the central act of worship, devotion, and Sacramental life of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

If this is your FOURTH year or more, select one of these two electives:
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF
Father Mills, Elizabeth Hudson, and Daniel Montgomery
Is living the Christian life easy? Do your friends hold you to a different standard from others? Do you expect to live differently from others? Does God expect you to live differently? The Christian life is not an easy life. Are you ready to make the difficult decisions that the world will force upon you? Do you know how you will make those decisions? On what will you base your decision? Whom will you consult? Is there really black and white or are the lines blurred? What would you do if...

DOGMA
Father McKinnon, Father Stambaugh, Taylor Watts, and Rebecca Harper
"Something is happening to us today... We are waging a war of religion... a life-and-death struggle between Christian and pagan.  It is a war of dogma.  The word dogma is unpopular and that is why I have used it... It is a lie that dogma does not matter; it matters enormously.  It is fatal to let people suppose that Christianity's only a mode of feeling... It is on the contrary a hard, tough, exacting and complex doctrine steeped in a drastic and uncompromising realism."  From Creed or Chaos by Dorothy L. Sayers..

Second Period Elective Courses for Juniors

THE GOOD BOOK
Father Cheney, Father Mills, and Molly Cramer
The Holy Bible is not just a book, but rather a library of books. Having knowledge of how it came to be and how it is arranged can be of great help in understanding what it means and how it applies to our lives as the written Word of God.

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT
Betsy James, Sister Sarah, and Daniel Montgomery
Seek ye first the kingdom of God... and then all these things shall be added unto you. In speaking to the great multitude, our Lord tells us about Christian discipline and how to build our lives on the solid foundation of his teaching..

DAVID
Chris Wood, Father Barry, and Emma Melo.
A mighty king as well as a wretched sinner; a study of this fascinating figure and what we learn about ourselves through his example of repentance.

Second Period Elective Courses for Seniors

THE TRIUMPH OF CHRISTIAN ETHICS IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS
Father Carlson, Taylor Watts, and Rob Thomason
Tolkein's fantasy is speaking to a new generation despite an increasingly secular, cynical, and technology-driven world; however, it is not escapism but truth they seek.  The trilogy is solidly grounded in the ultimate triumph of Christian values over sin. We will explore the presence (or absence) of Christian ethics in its characters as a way to explore the freedom of the will, the need to confront evil in the world and the triumphant power of sacrificial love (whether in Middle Earth or our own world).

IN THE IMAGE OF GOD HE CREATED THEM
Father Stambaugh, Elizabeth Hudson, and Jesse Shedden
Is God a man? What does marriage have to do with salvation? Is there sex in heaven? This class will explore the roles of male and female in God's plan of creation and redemption.

JESUS AS WE KNOW HIM
Beth Harrison, Helen Henry, and Judy Brown
Who do you say that I am? Portrayals of our Lord have varied widely throughout history. We will examine the Son of God as we see him depicted in art, literature, stage and screen, as contrasted with the Jesus of the Gospels.

Third Period Elective Courses for Both Juniors and Seniors

CHOIR:
Mark Dwyer and Mrs. Engels
(This course may be taken by BOTH Junior AND Senior Conferees)
At choir we will learn anthems for Mass and Evensong.

Third Period Elective Course for Juniors

THE CATHOLIC COMMUNIONS
Father O'Brien, Father McKinnon, and Judy Brown
Anglicanism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Roman Catholicism: a study and comparison of these three branches of the Church.

THE FOUR ACCOUNTS OF THE GOSPEL
Father Barry, Jesse Shedden, and Molly Cramer
The Gospel writers take a series of events in the life and ministry of Jesus to open up windows through which we catch glimpses of His mind and heart. How do the narratives differ and how are they alike? Are they really a trustworthy account of what Jesus actually said and did?

Third Period Elective Course for Seniors

DANTE'S PARADISO
Emma Melo, Helen Henry, Rob Thomason, and Rebecca Harper
The final act of the poet's Divine Comedy provides an incredible vision of heaven. Join Dante and Beatrice as the epic pilgrimage through Hell and Purgatory ends happily, even blissfully.

MARTYRS FOR THE FAITH
Father Robinson, Father Cheney, and Beth Harrison
What does it mean to call Jesus Lord? For many throughout the history of the Church, to call Jesus Lord meant losing their lives - through crucifixion, burning at the stake, beheading, firing squads, and a host of other methods. Who are some of these men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their faith and what can they teach us today?
